Hi all.

My friend who is a Linux enthusiast wants to convince a neighborhood
Internet Cafe owner to migrate to Linux. Is there any cafe management
software for Linux. Another requrement is it should look exactly similar to
windows xp. I am planning to use a theme for that but other suggestions are
welcome. There are many other obstacles too. The migration should be
Flawless.

Thanks for your Interest

Well the first requirement is a *Cafe management software* that runs on
Linux. Secondly the users must have no trouble using Linux ie- *it should
feel similar to windows XP*. Then all the chat clients should should work as
they do in Windows *including voice and video support!

Cafes are visited by many different people,If they start to like Linux, they

Hello Junise,
Pidgin does not support the Google Video Chat for now.

But there is another nice replacement for Pidgin, by the name Empathy.
It supports Google Video and Voice Chat.

See the following link for more info:
http://live.gnome.org/Empathy

In Ubuntu, u can install it by the following command:

sudo apt-get install empathy

It was not included in Jaunty, since it was still much 'untested' as
for then.

Anyway, I use it and find it to be much lighter and feature-rich than
Pidgin.
It has not shown any 'unstable' behaviour till now. Try it out.

Hope it'll be in Karmic (the next Ubuntu release).

That really wasn't the experience here. We had a thread on empathy a

empathy went from being everyone's favourite to being completely
broken! Empathy is a great software- just not ready yet. Give it a

Quiet frankly, Linux audio stack is a near complete mess! That
presents quiet a challenge to voice chat developers. Added to that,
proprietary multimedia signaling protocols and formats are tough to
crack! The only good news is the Jingle protocol. The devs are working
hard though. Keep your fingers crossed! Meanwhile you will have to put
up with poor voice chat and video chat capabilities.

Anyway, since many are interested in cafe management software, but
can't find one- let me make a suggestion. (Most likely to remain just
a suggestion, but I will suggest it anyway). Why don't everyone create
one? (Ducks for cover!) This is not such a hard task - python will do
just fine. Remember the software for the freedom toaster- it was
entirely created by FSUG-TVM members. Moreover, someone can make it
their college project.

Well its the chat software that is posing the biggest problem. We can create
a cafe management software but I don't think we can do much about the chat
clients and YES we should build software that isn't available for The Linux
platform.

Keep up the spirit man!
You sure pointed out a good solution, which sure interests me, and I
know there will be more...

But as you see, there mite be good cafe softwares already.
Let us see whether we can find a good one in a few weeks time.
And if the present ones are not found to be satisfactory, we can fire
up our own community project.

-------

So for the present, please try to find all possible linux (as well as
windows, for a comparitive analysis) cafe management solutions and
list them here.
And we can analyse them and make a decision.

Hello all,

Here are some, for a quick start....
(I got them from a quick search for "internet cafe" in freshmeat).

Here's wat i found:

--------------
ZybaCafe
-------------
ZybaCafe (formerly DireqCafe) is a full featured and complete Internet
cafe management suite with support for multiple-platform clients. Thin-
client Linux, fat-client Linux, and Windows are officially maintained.
Extension is easily done through plugins.

url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/zybacafe

-------------------------------------------

OutKafe

OutKafe is a next-generation Internet cafe management suite. It was
forked from ZybaCafe with the aim of ultimately replacing all
proprietary parts with completely free components. It includes a
server-side administration suite as well as clients for managing time
control on machines. A powerful plugin architecture allows for easy
extensibility and integration with other tools such as accounting
packages and CRM systems.

url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/outkafe

-------------------------------------------

ppa

ppa maintains a per-user prepaid account balance in an Internet cafe
environment. It uses operating system accounting files (wtmp) to debit
accounts, presents up-to-the-minute account balances on a per-user Web
page, and accepts payments and charges from an administrator.

url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/ppa

-------------------------------------------------

Cybercafe Organizer

The Cybercafe Organizer (CybOrg) is a point of sales and
administration system for Internet cafes (cyber cafes). It has a Web-
based interface and is written in Perl using Template Toolkit and a
RDBMS. It uses a client to block workstations, and is intended to be
used on a (possibly Linux) server with Win32/Linux clients. It also
provides a script to be used as the Active Desktop on Windows clients
to display station's status.

url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/cyborgproject

------------------------------------------------

OpenKiosk

OpenKiosk is a multi-platform kiosk management system for public
terminals and kiosks. X11 and Windows clients are currently supported.
Whether you are an Internet Cafe operator or a librarian, Openkiosk
can make your life easier.

url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/openkiosk

------------------------------------------------------

Of these, OutKafe seems to be really maintained project. The others
seem to be a bit outdated.

Here is it's homepage:
http://outkastsolutions.co.za/outkast/index.php?option=com_openwiki&id=outkafe

By the way, there are more out there, waiting for us to find them.
Use Google to search for more (suggestions: "internet cafe
management").

And for the ones that have been found, I request everybody to check
these out (especially, OutKafe) and please post your feedbacks here.

Regards,
Anto Jose

Hey guys,

I got a few more interesting links :D :

----

Zencafe is a GNU/Linux internet cafe desktop distribution based on
Zenwalk. Zenwalk is based on Slackware, and both Zenwalk and Zencafe
are mostly backwards compatible with Slackware.

(version 2.0 was released in April 2009)

Feature:
* latest stable software)
* fast (optimized for performance capabilities)
* User Friendly (designed for various internet cafe user technical
background)
* Rational (standard internet cafe mainstream application only)
* Evolutionary (netpkg installation, deepfreeze like tool, and
internet management software included)

screenshots: http://linux.blogs.ie/screenshots/
Loading Image...

download: http://linux.blogs.ie/downloads/ (around 700MB ISO)

(the Deepfreeze-like autorecovery seems real interesting)

-------------

By the way, the Internet Cafe Management software that runs on ZenCafe
is 'Cafe con Leche' .

It is also available for Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid.

The project seems not actively maintained (last updates were in 2006).
Still, it seems quite complete.

Please checkout the following link:

The project's homepage is at http://ccl.sourceforge.net/?page=main

I came across another project called gBilling, with CLEAN and
EXCELLENT looks!

The version seems to be just v0.1 beta2.
The bigger problem is that he seems to be an anti-English, only-
Indonesian type....seems there is no English translation. :-(

Anyway, couldnt avoid mentioning its good looks...
Chekkout d following screenshots:
http://gbilling.sourceforge.net/screenshot.html

----------------------

And here is a b.i.g. list of cyber cafe programs maintained by Michael
Howard (along with the his observations on each):
http://mik.howard.googlepages.com/cybercafemanagementprograms
--------------------

As of now, I seem to be interested in the following solutions for our
particular problem:

<> OutKafe -- well maintained

<> ZenCafe - i like the concept of a dedicated cafe distro (though i
wud prefer an ubuntu base)
- seems it mite b updated along for quite some time
- 'deepfreeze'-like autorecovery is also interesting

<> Cafe-con-Leche on Ubuntu

---- Please chekkout these and post your feedback

Thanks,
Anto Jose

Happy Computing!!!

Lol. A few hours ago there was none. Now there are many. Thanks a lot for
the links. This may not be enough to start a Linux based cafe but it sure is
a good start.Once again thanks for the tips.

Hello all,
Here are some, for a quick start....
(I got them from a quick search for "internet cafe" in freshmeat).
--------------
ZybaCafe
-------------
ZybaCafe (formerly DireqCafe) is a full featured and complete Internet
cafe management suite with support for multiple-platform clients. Thin-
client Linux, fat-client Linux, and Windows are officially maintained.
Extension is easily done through plugins.
url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/zybacafe
-------------------------------------------
OutKafe
OutKafe is a next-generation Internet cafe management suite. It was
forked from ZybaCafe with the aim of ultimately replacing all
proprietary parts with completely free components. It includes a
server-side administration suite as well as clients for managing time
control on machines. A powerful plugin architecture allows for easy
extensibility and integration with other tools such as accounting
packages and CRM systems.
url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/outkafe
-------------------------------------------
ppa
ppa maintains a per-user prepaid account balance in an Internet cafe
environment. It uses operating system accounting files (wtmp) to debit
accounts, presents up-to-the-minute account balances on a per-user Web
page, and accepts payments and charges from an administrator.
url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/ppa
-------------------------------------------------
Cybercafe Organizer
The Cybercafe Organizer (CybOrg) is a point of sales and
administration system for Internet cafes (cyber cafes). It has a Web-
based interface and is written in Perl using Template Toolkit and a
RDBMS. It uses a client to block workstations, and is intended to be
used on a (possibly Linux) server with Win32/Linux clients. It also
provides a script to be used as the Active Desktop on Windows clients
to display station's status.
url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/cyborgproject
------------------------------------------------
OpenKiosk
OpenKiosk is a multi-platform kiosk management system for public
terminals and kiosks. X11 and Windows clients are currently supported.
Whether you are an Internet Cafe operator or a librarian, Openkiosk
can make your life easier.
url: http://freshmeat.net/projects/openkiosk
------------------------------------------------------
Of these, OutKafe seems to be really maintained project. The others
seem to be a bit outdated.
http://outkastsolutions.co.za/outkast/index.php?option=com_openwiki&id=outkafe
By the way, there are more out there, waiting for us to find them.
Use Google to search for more (suggestions: "internet cafe
management").
And for the ones that have been found, I request everybody to check
these out (especially, OutKafe) and please post your feedbacks here.
Regards,
Anto Jose

Hi,

Please remember that Empathy is somewhat an active project,
and "a few months" is more than a bit of a time for better versions to
come out.
Empathy isn't simply another IM client. The software framework used
by Empathy- called Telepathy is being developed along with it. When it
is finished, it will allow anyone to embed an IM client in their
application. It is this complexity that breaks it so often. So it will
take a little more time than a normal client. You can confirm this at
Telepathy's roadmap page. But when it is stable it will find a
permanent place is the Gnome environment.

Ofcourse! My policy is: Don't reinvent the wheel if you are living
in the 21st century. I hadn't done a thorough search on cafe
management software. But don't you see? The suggestion worked! We have
several possible candidates now! People would rather search for the
software when faced with the prospect of developing a new one! :D

What I meant by "This may not be enough to start a Linux based cafe" was
that the problems facing the administrative side of the cafe is solved (
cafe management s/w).

Now the user side with chat clients supporting Voice and video are few on
Linux. Many people use Cafes for chatting. As I mentioned before these
clients aren't available natively on Linux.

Many others use the cafe for downloading documents and printing them. Does
Linux have drivers for the printers in the cafe.

Next how will the users react to the new Operating System.(This one can only
be found out after implementation)

Hello All. I'm Binny's friend.
As he said I want my neighbourhood internet cafe to migrate to linux.

Activities in the cafe: browsing, chatting [video, voice & text],
saving files, printing [this is done by the cafe owner], playing media
files [video & audio].

Here are the problems to solve.

1. A theme that transforms the linux system to look like windows.
Luckily that appears to be solved. I found XPde at www.xpde.com

Because of the theme, the users may not be able to know that they are
using linux unless they are reminded with ads in cafe and wallpaper.
But when they will know about this they will surely use linux with
XPde because of high security features in linux, the theme of XP,
stablity of linux, no license charge, no viruses, etc. So if this
internet cafe problem gets solved, then there is a high chance that we
can spread linux without much hassle.

2. Chat clients like Yahoo! messenger, MSN Messenger, Google Talk &
Rediff Bol must be installed and also they must look like the windows
versions.
I'm planning to use them with Wine [there may be problems. I think the
wine community will solve it]. Empathy, Pidgin and other chat pgms in
linux won't offer an immediate sign in procedure.

3. When trying to save files for printing or open files for
transmission, linux type drive letters and folder names are displayed.
This will create confusion. I think that the XPde team should have
solved it too. I don't know for sure.

4. No pendrives are allowed in the client computers. So for mailing or
saving a file in the pendrive, network transmission of the file is
done by the cafe owner. So the owner must be able to use the desktops
and home folders of all client computers for read and write. Will the
linux folder share procedures handle the problem?

5. Palying media files. Video and audio players with sufficient
controls and user friendliness is required. All codecs must be
supported.
Solution: Totem and GStreamer are fine.

6. This is the main part. If we are unable solve this problem, then
this hassle will be for nothing.
Here is the problem.
Now the cafe owner uses a cafe management software that blocks or
provides access to the internet for the client computers. The system
he works with is the server. It is windows xp. The cafe is networked
to provide internet access to all the computers through the server. He
blocks the internet access of a client computer when no-one is using
it. He does this to avoid automated downloading traffic. This is
important.

Binny asked about a cafe management software for linux. But the real
problem is slightly different.
The server of the cafe can't be changed to Linux!
The cafe owner does DTP and Project works. He don't want to switch his
server to linux as this will temporarily halt his DTP & Project works.
He don't know to use DTP software and OpenOffice in linux. And also
the customers want their work to be done in MS-Office, Photoshop,
Pagemaker, etc.
Also some of his client computers [1 or 2] will be using windows for
the purpose of gaming.

So what we want is a software that blocks and allows internet access
to linux and windows clients from a windows server [XP]. Also the
software must be able to read and write the desktop and home folders
of the linux and windows clients [for file transfer].

The cafe owner now uses free/demo antivirus solutions and reinstalls
windows once every month to avoid viruses. If this problem gets solved
then I'm sure that he will switch to Linux.

Do you think that this post is to be posted with a different title.
Then you are free to do so. We want this solved as the future of linux
will become more brighter in trivandrum. Don't forget to link the new
post here.

The migration should be
Flawless.

I think the XPde team haven't updated their release since august 2004.
I had a pretty bad experience with the XPde 0.5.1. Most of the menu entries
are not working,Cant even open the terminal and once it is installed I found
it difficult to remove. . Surely your Cafe friend will not be happy with it.

So I would recommend you should stick to standard desktop environments like
Gnome, Kde or xfce.
But if you are only interested in title bars and buttons, you can go for xp
like themes.

Hi

It is great initiative that you are taking

Changing the theme may be eye -catching , but it will be better to stick to the normal Gnome or KDE interface

After reading your mail , I feel you need to have a installation where you have all you need ie codes for graphic , VoIP clients, Chat client etc

Why not try Super OS (http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Super_OS) . It is based on Ubuntu but with more packages and 100 % compatiable with Ubuntu , now it has its own repositories

Its features

Features which will be interesting for you

* Multimedia support: Super OS is prepackaged with support for MP3 files and video-DVDs by default, it also includes additional codecs, and VLC media player.

* Support for Microsoft Office 2007 file formats with OpenOffice.org 3.0.1

* Improved Internet experience: It includes an additional web browser (Opera), Adobe Flash Player, more communication software (aMSN and Skype).

* Additional software: It also includes, Wine, the GUI for Uncomplicated Firewall, and other software.

The download file size is little more ,about 990 MB

We can first try installing SuperOS in one PC, then configure it fully as the way we need .Later usign "Remastersys" http://www.geekconnection.org/remastersys/ubuntu.html .We could make ISO images of the installed copy and installed it to other PC

About point 3 :-

User will get used to it soon , may be the staff could help them initially

About point 4 :-

Ya we could do this also , using samba , or setting up FTP

About requirement 5:- It can play all media files my VLC player which is there in SuperOS

About the Requirement 6 :- To block the INTERNET access when system not is use . I guess we could try out IPTABLES for this .

Also to read and write the software to client PC :- This is also quite possible using SAMBA , from the cafe owners XP machine he can read and write to Linux client machines

Please do update us about your progress
Thanks
